According to the WSJ Google are about to start selling their own, unlocked, unsubsidised phone (called the Nexus) running the latest version of Android, 2.1.
The phone, called Nexus One, was designed inside Google and will be sold, at least initially, without a wireless partner, these people said. It is the latest sign of the Internet giant’s ever-broadening wireless ambitions as Google hunts for ways to expand its Internet services beyond computers.
The move has had lots of press about the implications it has for the Google Apple partnership, but to be frank, the more interesting element is that surely by doing their own phone Google will be alienating their own partners like HTC, Motorola and Sony.
On the plus side I guess any improvements Google make to Android for the Nexus will flow through to other vendors too.
